Currently, to apply to VIPKID you must meet three requirements:
1. A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in any field
2. Eligibility to work in the US or Canada
3. At least 1 year of teaching experience (includes homeschooling, tutoring, coaching, mentoring or other life experiences)
A teaching qualification (in any subject or ESL) is preferred, but not essential. If you don’t have one already, you will be able to take a short TESOL course as part of the application process.
Your level of English must be fluent and will be evaluated during your application.
Though not a requirement, you will also have a better chance if you have some experience of the K12 curriculum (as a student or teacher).
A ‘North American’ accent is not essential, though you will be required to teach American English. (See here for more about non-American applicants.)
If you have any questions about whether you are eligible to apply, you can email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Other useful experience
If you meet all three requirements above and you are good with young kids, you are the type of applicant VIPKID is looking for. The application process mainly tests your ability to make learning fun in an online setting, rather than your previous experience.
However, the following skills and experience may also be useful, especially when you start teaching. For example, teachers with strong ‘bios’ and uploaded qualifications get more bookings. But these skills are not essential and very few teachers have all of them.
Experience of teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or an ESL qualification.
Teaching qualifications in any subject.
Experience tutoring online (this might help you do well in the demo/interview, in order to start on a higher rate of pay).
Experience working with young children who are still learning English (including your own kids).
Being skilled at entertaining kids: being silly, funny and behaving like a kid yourself (this has got to be one of the few jobs where this is a plus!). Having a lot of patience is also very important.
